Alex Whorms writes her first original Christmas song

While some artists work to master their chosen genre and others may even manage to define one, Alex Whorms crafts music that is essentially a genre unto itself. Seated at her beloved keyboard, the young vocalist and composer flows freely and flawlessly between styles and sounds, gracefully blending classic singer-songwriter pop, jazz, soul, rock, classical, folk and almost anything else that strikes her fancy — all while investing everything with honest tales and authentic emotions drawn from her own life and experiences.

Alex joined us to talk about her first original holiday song, Christmas Morning.

We talked about:

  • Comments we received from last week’s show All about bridges with Allister Bradley
  • How our episode on bridges prompted Neel to examine the structures of the songs on his electro-pop EP Ace Symmetry, and how the songs with more complex structures resulted in the more interesting tracks
  • There’s still time to win a copy of The Laws of Creativity book by Joey Cofone. Check out Joey’s episode and send us an email at feedback@songtalk.ca telling us what creativity means for you, and you’ll be entered to win a copy of the book!
  • An interesting article: Music May Alter Connectivity in the Brain | Technology Networks
  • How Alex’s holiday-time experience changed during the pandemic, prompting her to write her first holiday song
  • Combining both personal and universal experiences into the lyrics
  • Writing a piano figure that sounds like falling snow
  • How Alex was influenced by recordings of other holiday songs
  • Making your holiday song sound “nostalgic”
  • Differentiating sections of your songs by varying melodies and rhymes
  • Putting holiday-themed lyrics up first in your song if it doesn’t sound like a holiday song

BREAKING NEWS: Christmas Morning was named on CBC’s Best New Holiday Music for 2022 – Congratulations, Alex!
